Homeschool Chic Phoenix AZ Chapter

One of our greatest aspirations for Homeschool Chic is that we reach and help as many mom’s as we possibly can. One of the ways we do this is by having free events every month. So far we have only had those available in SLC, UT but our numbers are quickly growing so we couldn’t be more excited to announce, Drum Roll Please!…

New Chapter of Homeschool Chic in Phoenix AZ!

Crystal Chatterton is an amazing and Chic Homeschooling mom who will be leading events in Phoenix! I want to introduce you to her.

“My name is Crystal Chatterton and I am so excited to be part of the Homeschool Chic community!  I live in Phoenix with my family:  Ben, my husband of four years and counting, Tommy (3 years old), and Lily (7 months old).

Ben and I met at BYU when we were both finishing Master’s Degrees in two very different fields:  mine in chemistry and his in linguistics.  We got engaged after dating for three weeks, married seven weeks after that, and moved to Arizona three days after our wedding.  I started working on a Ph.D. in chemistry education at ASU and Ben got a sweet job working from home writing language assessment tests.  It wasn’t long before I found out I was pregnant and quit my doctorate program so I could stay home and raise my son full time.

When I was growing up the only people I knew who did homeschool were weird!  I thought they were crazy!  My perceptions and attitudes all changed my sophomore year of college when I met a girl who was socially adept, driven, and almost done with her Bachelor’s Degree at age 17.  She had been homeschooled and she changed my whole attitude of what homeschool could be.  She planted a seed in my heart.  Several years later when my husband and I started dating he told me that he had been homeschooled.  This was a huge plus in my book:)  Discussing educational ideals has been one of the hallmarks of our relationship right from the beginning.

There are so many reasons that I want to homeschool my kids.  The biggest reason, of course, is that it is what feels right for our kids and for our family.  The advantages of having so much family time and having the freedom to give each of our children the education that they specifically need are among the most compelling reasons to homeschool for me.  The more I research the public school system versus homeschool the more confident I am that homeschooling is the right choice for our family.

Even though my kids are not technically school-age yet we have started establishing good habits that will help us have a successful homeschool.  We have established time every day for reading classic literature, working together, and playing together.  We visit the zoo, the library, and museums often.  We also love to do science experiments and various art projects at home.  We don’t do any “formal” school yet, but we love to learn and to have fun doing it.  My biggest educational goal is for my children to learn to love learning.”

Welcome Crystal! We are so excited to have you Crystal running the Phoenix Chapter!

All of you Homeschool Chic mama’s will be seeing a lot of her from now on on the blog and also in person if you are in, or close to Phoenix.
